Connected but Physically Separate

As for all other Ontario faith communities, all Ottawa Friends Meeting in-person activities are suspended until further notice.

We are, however, meeting virtually on Zoom at 10:30 am on Sundays and 7 pm on Wednesdays.  Everyone on the "minutes" e-mail distribution list should be receiving e-mails about these meetings.  If you aren't on this e-mail list of members and regular attenders, e-mail the webminder  and I'll help you get connected.  Young Adult Friends (roughly age 18 to 35) are also connecting virtually--if you are an OMM YAF and havent been contacted, e-mail the webminder.

If you are new to Zoom, there are a couple of helpful things to know:

  • If you are joining in by computer, you can click on the provided link and you'll be asked for permission to download and install software needed to connect.  If you want to interact, you'll need a video camera and a mic.  A headset is helpful but not essential.
  • If you are joining in by smart phone or tablet, before the meeting you need to go to your usual app store to download the app.  This means, for example, that iPhone and iPad users would go to the AppStore, search for Zoom and download the"Zoom Cloud Meetings" app.  Android users would do something similar with their usual app source.  When it's time to meet, you'll input the provided meeting ID number and password into the Zoom app.  If you normally disable microphone use for all applications, you will need to allow Zoom to access your microphone.  (On the iPad, this is under settings-->privacy-->microphone.)
  • You should find that you can turn your video on or off, and that you'll have a choice between seeing a grid with everyone's video or seeing a larger picture of the person speaking at the time.  On smaller screens, you may need to "swipe" through screens to see everyone.
  • We are not going to use the text chat or "raise your hand" features.  If you wish to speak you can temporarily unmute by holding down the space bar (if you have it configured) on a computer, Alt + A (Windows), or Shift + Command + A (Mac), or toggle the microphone symbol.
