GOOD NEWS SERVICE #15: NOV-Dec, 2009

Over the years, the message at Christmas and Hanukkah, in the midst of war and hatred, has been one for peace and good will for all. This issue celebrates a few of those individuals and groups who devote so much of their lives striving for both. One such person is Angela Pinchero, whose work for peace in the midst of violent conflicts in Sri Lanka and Sudan is briefly described in item #12, below.

1. ASTEROID ROTBLAT: NEW STAR IN THE HEAVENS

Dec. 7/09 via London Pugwash Office.
The International Astronomical Union has named an asteroid after Joseph Rotblat. He was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 1995 for his efforts toward nuclear disarmament. A signatory to the 1955 Russell-Einstein Manifesto, Rotblat was  the guiding spirit of the Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs and helped prevent the  use of nuclear weapons during the Cold War.

Grocery cards support refugee housing

Your grocery money can support refugee housing with a Loblaws/Independen/NoFrills grocery swipe card or a Loeb gift certificate. Sign up for gift certificates from Loeb or a swipe card from Loblaws and those companies make a donation towards refugee housing assistance through OMRA. You get a gift certificate or swipe card that can be used exactly like cash. Every cent of the money you use to buy the gift certificate or swipe card can be redeemed for groceries. With the Loblaws swipe card you can purchase groceries at Loblaws, Independent, No Frills, Valumart, Provigo or some other stores.

You can make a one time purchase and receive your gift certificate or swipe card, or you can provide postdated cheques dated for the first Sunday of each month and receive the cards on the second Sunday of the month.

Remember with every dollar you spend you are supporting refugee housing in Ottawa.

Bullfrog Power and Sustainable Power

As we all know the cost of electricity is rising in Ontario and the sources of that electricity are controversial. Our Meeting has join bullfrog power as a way of supporting environmentally friendly and sustainable electricity. You can find out more about bullfrog power at www.bullfrogpower.com. It means that we are paying an extra $50.00/month on top of our regular electric bill. We use this opportunity to remind you to be aware and turn off lights and fans that do not need to be on. "Last one out of the room please turn out the lights!" There are little signs around to remind you. Please keep the message in mind at home too.
